L
ocated in Khanh Hoa province,
Binh Ba - popularly known as
Lobster Island - is small, at three
square kilometers. It is also one
of the first places to enjoy sunrise in
Vietnam.
The island is rather isolated and off
the beaten track, but it can be reached
in 90 minutes from Cam Ranh’s Ba Ngoi
Port.
At a friend’s suggestion, I booked a
package tour with Nguyen Minh Hoang,
manager and guide of Binh Ba Tourist.
At 7.30PM, we left Ho Chi Minh City on
an air-con overnight bus. We arrived at
Cam Ranh city at 6AM and swiftly board-
ed a boat for the journey to Binh Ba.
Our first stop was Nha Cu beach
which boasts one of the most beauti-
ful coral reefs in the area. The water is
crystal-clear and blue. If you don’t like
swimming or diving, it’s easy to stand
on the cliffs to view the colourful coral
and the fish swimming in the water. I
took a swim further from the shore and
saw a wonderful underwater world of
sea cucumbers and sea snails.
After swimming and diving, we
visited a lobster boathouse to discov-
er how local fishermen catch fish and
breed various kinds of lobsters before
sampling some of their freshest offer-
ings for lunch.
The afternoon was very exciting
as we learned about the lifestyle and
living-conditions of the island residents.
There are about 700 households with
some 5,000 people calling Binh Ba
Home.
There aren’t many hotels on the
island, nor many restaurants or bars;
however, it is possible to rent fully-
timeout
