Champa Towers
The Champa Towers complex in-
cludes seven groups of 14 temple ruins
scattered around the province. These
are considered the apex of the archi-
tectural and sculptural art works of the
Champa culture. The towers remain al-
most wholly intact, while Champa ves-
tiges at other sites are mostly in ruins.
Doi Tower (or Hung Thanh Tower)
was built at the end of the 12th century
in Dong Da ward, Quy Nhon city, and
is a unique example of Champa archi-
tectural art. The tower’s architecture
was influenced by art from the Indian
region. Binh Lam Tower was built on a
tall hill in Phuoc Hoa village, Tuy Phuoc
district, 22km from Quy Nhon city. The
tower is shaped like a square vase with
each side 10 metres wide. It has a so-
phisticated design with beautiful and
strong lines.
Banh It Towers were built between
the end of the 11th century and the
beginning of the 12th, in Phuoc Hiep,
Tuy Phuoc district. They are located on
the top of a hill between two branches
of the Con River. The towers look like
Banh It (a traditional southern cake)
from afar. Each tower has its own spe-
cific architecture and on top of each is a
stone statute of the God Shiva.
Canh Tien Tower was built in the
16th century. Its distinguishing feature
is the use of violet coloured slats of
sculptured stone in the inside part of
the wall pillars. The architecture, with
the leaves upturned to the top, creates
the image of flying wings, so is called
Canh Tien, meaning Fairy Wings.
Do Ban Ramparts
This set of ramparts was built at the
end of 10th century in An Nhon district
during the reign of the Yangpuku Vijaya
Dynasty. In 1775 the citadel was rebuilt
and expanded 15 miles to the east by
the Tay Son Dynasty. There is little re-
maining of the last citadel of the Cham-
pa civilization, only laterite walls and
granite-paved roads. Hoang De Citadel
is not large but it has a specific beauty
and displays the style of Champa archi-
tecture with three circles of ramparts:
the Inner Citadel, the Outer Citadel and
the Forbidden Citadel. Inside Hoang De
Citadel are many remains, including Bat
Giac House and several statues.
Ong Nui Pagoda
Ong Nui Pagoda was built in 1702
on a hill in the south of Nui Ba, Phu
Cat district. Its backs onto high moun-
tains and faces the sea. The pagoda is
surrounded by springs and rests in a
majestic landscape providing a peaceful
atmosphere. Two rows of pillars open
the way for stone ladders leading to
the pagoda. The meandering road dates
back three centuries. The pagoda hous-
es many cultural and historical items.
