The US Embassy in
Hanoi and CAMA Vietnam
have announced the in-
augural Artwork is Work:
ASEAN Music Festival. It is
a celebration of creative,
Asian youth culture and
will feature bands from the
ASEAN region, as well as
art and community groups
from within Hanoi.
Performers include ga-
rage rockers Blood Sugar
Politik (Myanmar), tradi-
tional Thai funk act Molam
International (Thailand),
the post-rock algorithms
of Pulso (Philippines) Vi-
etnam’s nu-metal heroes
18+ (Vietnam) and genre-
defying electronic sound
artists Muon (Singapore).
Besides non-stop live mu-
sic on the main stage, the
festival will feature a crea-
tive arts market run by the
Hanoi Flea Market and a
visual arts center curated
by Hanoi’s Onion Cellar
collective.
As well as promoting
pride in the cultural vi-
brancy of modern ASEAN
nations, the festival is also
intended to highlight re-
spect for artists in Asia via
Intellectual Property Rights
(IPR). Tickets for the event
will be available on the
door priced at VND300,000
and VND100,000 for those
holding a valid ASEAN
passport.

Sakura Festival
A joint collaboration be-
tween Japan andQuangNinh
province, the Sakura Exhibi-
tion, will present handicraft
products, foods and infor-
mation about tourism in Ja-
pan and Quang Ninh. There
will also be an art exchange
between Quang Ninh and
Japan, plus an exhibition on
Quang Ninh’s art. The festi-
val will be held in early April,
aimed at enhancing cultural
exchange between Quang
Ninh province and Japan.
The sixth edition of Ha-
noi Sound Stuff will feature
exciting music, from experi-
mental to electro pop, and
include film screenings with
live music. First, on April 12,
a sit-down electronic event
will take place with Japa-
nese, Austrian, UK, Swed-
ish and Vietnamese artists
organised in the courtyard
of the Museum of History;
this will raise funds for chal-
lenged and disabled chil-
dren. Then, on April 13, Chu
Van An will play host to a
DJ dance event, with artists
from Germany, England,
Austria, Switzerland, Israel
and Vietnam.
Generations of art
Paintings by five re-
nowned artists from differ-
ent generations, Bui Xuan
Phai, Nguyen Tu Nghiem,
Van Duong Thanh, Nguyen
Dinh Dzung and Tran Thanh
Canh, will be shown to-
gether for the first time this
month. The paintings have
been brought back to Viet-
nam from other countries,
such as Singapore, Switzer-
land and Thailand. Known
as one of the four pillars of
modern Vietnamese art, Bui
Xuan Phai’s art works can
be viewed in many national
art galleries in Asia and Eu-
rope. Nguyen Tu Nghiem is
known for his gouache and
lacquer paintings – the lat-
ter a traditional Vietnamese
art medium dating back for
more than one thousand
years.Van Duong Thanh is
one of Asia’s most talented
international female art-
ists. She grew up in Ha-
noi and studied for twelve
years at l’Ecole de Beaux
Arts l’Indochine and at the
Academy of Fine Arts.
