Seafood
Seafood is most people’s first
choice as Nha Trang is a coastal city.
There must be hundreds of restaurants
serving the catch of the day. Now al-
most every corner of the city seems to
have one small seafood shop or restau-
rant. However, eating freshly cooked
seafood on the beach is something spe-
cial. There are lots of vendors selling
seafood on the beach. They generally
buy their fresh seafood in the morning
and start their business at 11am the
same day.
In the afternoon, there are also lots
of seafood stalls along the main streets
of Tran Phu and Pham Van Dong. They
offer lots of fresh lobster, big sea crabs,
squid, sea snails and clams. However,
the prices at seafood restaurants are
rather higher than you might think giv-
en this is a coastal city. Despite this, if
you know where to look, it is possible
to find value and quality in one place,
and a local friend of mine pointed me
to Hai San Nha Toi at 4 Ngo Quyen
which offers friendly service and rea-
sonable prices. A simple place, with
plastic tables and chairs, the seafood is
very tasty, with the grilled oyster with
cheese and eggs, steamed shrimps in
salt, grilled blood acra and rice porridge
with oyster all being excellent choices.
Jellyfish rice noodle
In Nha Trang, I always stop first at
Bun Sua Ninh Hoa at 2 Lan Ong street,
near Dam Market, to enjoy a hot bowl
of bun sua. I would say that this jellyfish
dish is definitely more texturally inter-
esting than it is flavourful. The broth is
clear and mild and the cha and toma-
toes come through where the jellyfish
lack. The broth is cooked with tiny fish
eggs named liet and has natural pure
and sweet taste that blends with the
crispy jellyfish and the hot chili to make
a simple, but unforgettable dish.
Fish rice noodle
Bun Ca Nam Beo in Block B2 on
Phan Boi Chau street is my alfresco
stop for bun ca —rice noodles served
with jellyfish and fish pie. The broth is
made from boiled sailfish and mackerel
bones. Quite different from the fatty
boiled pork bone broth, this is sweet
and savoury and has the added benefit
of being low fat.
