T
he rapid urbanization and the
over-use of natural resources
have caused unprecedented
damage in many parts of the
world. We are facing ever greater prob-
lems due to green house emissions and
the resulting climate change. Green
buildings are a solution to these prob-
lems and they will help build a more
sustainable world.
Energy experts estimate that com-
pared to a normal building, a green
building can save 30 per cent of en-
ergy, reduce carbon emissions by 35
per cent, and save 30-50 per cent of
water. Furthermore, between 50-90
per cent of waste treatment expenses
can be cut.
In Vietnam, the term ‘green build-
ing’ has become a buzz word in recent
years following the establishment of
the Vietnam Green Building Council and
the introduction of the international
green building standard, LEED.
Nguyen Van Tat, vice chairman of
Vietnam Architect Association, pointed
out that material suppliers have an im-
portant role in green architecture and
the Clean Colorbond® Thermatech® of
NS BlueScope Vietnam is a case in point.
This product has been used at
many factories such as those of Coca
Cola HCM Site Master Plan Project and
Cargill Ha Nam factory. This roofing
material has high solar reflectivity, thus
less energy is absorbed and the con-
vection and conduction of heat to the
atmosphere is reduced. As a result, this
technology can stem green house emis-
sions and slow down climate change.
