ietnam is increasingly turning
toward green development
and its people are more and
more aware of the need for
environment protection. Likewise, the
leaders in Quang Ninh province know
they must make the economy of the
province greener to exploit its huge
tourism potential.
“Green growth is vital because it
can create stable and sustainable eco-
nomic development and solve the ur-
gent problems of society which are
caused by rapid development, the
exploitation of minerals and years of
unplanned urban development,” says
Pham Minh Chinh, Secretary of Quang
Ninh Provincial Party Committee.
He adds that in the future, tourism
will replace mining as the core industry
in the province: “We want people think of
Quang Ninh as the most famous tourism
destination in Vietnam, instead of as the
largest coal mining zone in the country.”
The tourism potential of Quang
Ninh is considerable and Halong Bay
is central to it. It covers an area of
43,400 hectares and includes over
1,600 islands and islets, most of which
are uninhabited. It forms a spectacular
