A
n Giang province has the
highest number mountains
in the Delta region, with 37
mountains and hills. The ar-
ea’s name itself refers to seven sacred
peaks including Co To Mountain and
Ong Ket Mountain . An Giang is full of
mysteries and many sites in the area are
yet to have been discovered.
DALAT OF THE MEKONG DELTA
Cam Mountain (Thien Cam Son),
stands at 716m and is the most impos-
ing of them all. The area around it and
its sloped also accommodates the high-
est number of inhabitants among the
seven mountains of An Giang.
The climate there is ideal, averag-
ing 18-20 degrees Celsius, partly be-
cause the mountain is frequently im-
mersed in mist.
Thanks to its year-round cool climate
the people grow diverse temperate zone
vegetables such as carrots and kohlrabi.
They also grow some typical Dalat flow-
ers, hence it is sometimes referred to as
the Dalat of the Mekong Delta.
On top of Cam Mountain is Bo
Hong temple, from where one can view
the whole panorama of endlessly ex-
tending mountain ranges and green
fields. When the sky is clear, standing
at the temple one can see Ha Tien sea,
Ta Lon mountain range in neighbouring
Cambodia and the archaeological site
of Oc Eo-Ba The.
Halfway up the mountain there are
many impressive architectural works
which prove appealing to visitors. One
is Van Linh Pagoda with its gold painted
Buddha statues in a solemn and quiet set-
ting, leaving deep impressions on visitors.
In the front part, there is a nine-
story bell tower with a Dai Hong Chung
copper bell weighing 1.2 tonnes. In the
temple’s centre, there is a nine-story
35 metre high statue of Quan Am (a
female god).
There are also three other small
towers and behind it many flower and
fruit gardens offer plenty of peaceful
shade.
At the foot of the pagoda is the
100,000sqm Thuy Liem Lake which is
home to diverse fish species. Above the
lake is a solid 33-metre high Di Lac Bud-
dha statue which was recognised as the
largest Buddha statue in Southeast Asia
by the Asia Guinness Book.
In the past Cam Mountain was the
rendezvous point for patriotic intel-
lectuals of Can Vuong, an anti-French
movement in the late nineteenth cen-
An Giang, a Mekong Delta province in the upper Mekong, is not only
well-known for peculiar floating markets, but also its stunning and mysterious
That Son mountain range.
