Sapa is one of the places where snow and ice ap-
pears most often in Vietnam. According to statistics,
from 1971 to 2011 snow fell 15 times in Sapa. This
time, visitors could see snow in many areas around the
town, such as the Heaven Gate, the Silver Waterfall,
the Hoang Lien Son Mountain and the O Quy Ho Pass.
Those who headed further into Y Ty commune in
Bat Xat district could see deep snow which covered the
roads and villages as well as the surrounding mountains.
The snow in the area reached thicknesses of up to
50cm, which was many times more than in Sapa. The
temperature reached -2 and this led to the death of 76
cattle and destroyed more than 750ha of vegetables.
It is estimated that the commune suffered a total loss
of VND16.3 billion. Despite the heavy losses, a lot
of visitors took the opportunity to take pictures. The
hotels and motels in Sapa were all fully booked and
all roads to Sapa saw heavy traffic with people from
all over Vietnam converging to get a glimpse of the
special spectacle.
