Traditional Ca Tru
Ca Tru
is a rare, an-
cient form of music. It was
once a way of expressing
individualism among the
elites and most respected
intellectuals of Vietnamese
society.
As such,
ca tru
was
denounced as an inappro-
priate form of theatre by
the government during the
latter half of the 20th cen-
tury, but it is now finding
its way back to the cultural
scene. It can now be heard
in Hanoi every Wednesday,
Friday and Sunday night
at 42-44 Hang Bac, Hoan
Kiem district, Hanoi.
Blurred reality
In the latest exhibi-
tion to hit San Art,
Echoing
Nostalgia, Collecting Coun-
termemory
the audience is
put in a space where the
line between the past and
the present is blurred. Art-
ists Pham Ngoc Lan, John
Monteith and Nguyen Trinh
Thi each participate with a
video artwork in which BT
Shaw’s poetry is interwo-
ven. In this work, the chron-
ological progression from
past to present is no longer
completely linear. The com-
mon perspective on past
values, classic beauty and
historical forms of uncondi-
tional belief are challenged.

Piknic Elektronic
Hard to find, but worth
the effort, Softwater is a
beautiful venue a stone’s
throw from the Red River
and one of the few places
in the capital to lounge
around on a fresh cut
lawn in the afternoon sun.
Packed out every Sunday
afternoon with people who
come to chill to the sounds
of the Piknic DJs, this is the
only way to round out the
weekend.
Softwater : 49, Road 5,
An Duong, Yen Phu ward,

ry Sunday From 4 – 9pm

in Ho Chi Minh City that is
set to connect the local cul-
tural community through
fashion and contemporary
art. To celebrate the open-
ing, an inaugural exhibition
