B
orn in 1953, artist Hoang Dinh
lives and works in Hanoi. The
artist’s journey started in 1976
when he worked as a university
lecturer. His work ranges from applied
graphic design and product design to
emotive paintings of nature and portrai-
ture. His works have been collected by
private collectors from the Netherlands,
Austria, Sweden, Canada, United States
of America, Germany and Singapore.
His paintings and typographic arts
mainly depict the lives and landscapes
around him. It seems that the love and
passion for his hometown is always
burning in his heart and soul – some-
thing that reveals itself on his canvas.
Hoang Dinh sets free his mind and
body as he makes his brushstrokes. In
some paintings, they are soft and gen-
tle, while in others he lays bold, strong
lines and shapes.
Such is the vibrancy of his works,
they seem to create their own sound.
Viewers seem to hear the the click and
clack of cyclos resounding from his Ha-
noi Old Street paintings; or the squeak
of shoulder poles heavily burboned
with golden rice baskets.
Dinh is perhaps best known for his
use of colour in his oil paintings - bril-
liant and multiform, it forms a striking
contrast with his private, discreet per-
son manner.
