intend to stay so long in Vietnam, but a
visit to the museum changed my mind.
I love the colourful cultures of Vietnam-
ese ethnic communities. I will ask my
local friend and go trekking somewhere
in the mountainous area.”
The museum is currently being ex-
panded, with a new four storey, kite
shaped building almost complete. With
a 7,000 sqm area, it will present the cul-
tures and civilizations of other countries
in Southeast Asia.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Thieu, deputy
director of the museum has great hopes
for the new wing: “With more than 3,000
artifacts from Southeast Asia, soon the
Vietnam Museum of Ethnology will paint
a vivid picture of the region’s many eth-
nologies making it an even more attrac-
tive tourist draw.”
In the first half of 2013, the museum wel-
comed 250,000 visitors, including 200,000
Vietnamese and 50,000 foreigners from 59
nations. French tourists account for nearly
one third of all foreign visitors. To date,
the museum has collected 27,000 artifacts,
including 23,000 artefacts from Vietnam,
more than 2,000 Southeast Asian artifacts
and 1,500 artifacts of other countries;
11,300 photographs and slides; 2,400 audio-
tapes and videotapes and 900 CD-ROMs. The
Southeast Asia Exhibition area is expected
to open for visitors on November 30, 2013.
