the overall birth rate has declines, the
population is still rising. Nevertheless,
RISK OF AN
AGED POPULATION
It is forecast that by 2020, 18 per-
cent of Vietnam’s population will be
old people. According to the General
Statistics Office, Vietnam will enter the
period of aging population after 2017
and it will enter the aged population
period in the next two decades.
The National Committee on Elderly
People estimates that by 2050, 30 per-
cent of Vietnam’s population will be the
elderly. Of the number, 81.2 percent
will live in the countryside and 18.8
percent in urban areas. Worryingly, only
16-17 per cent of them have a pension.
Professor Nguyen Dinh Cu of the
National Economics University, like
many experts, suggests that the policy
on population should be adjusted to en-
sure a potential labour workforce and
a good pension scheme for Vietnam.
He confirmed that there is no adjust-
ment planned, but stressed Vietnam
no longer concentrates on reducing the
birthrate like three years ago.
