PREVIEW
Drowning a dragon
Artist Sandrine Llou-
quet’s fourth solo exhi-
bition is ongoing at the
Gallerie Quynh, titled The
Chapter I: Where I attempt
to drown the dragon. Al-
chemy,
transformation,
discovery and rebirth
are recurrent themes in
the show which uses high-
ly symbolic images and
metaphors.
The ambitious exhi-
bition is divided into two
parts: nigredo (blackness)
andalbedo (whiteness) in
reference to the first two
of the four major stages of
the Magnum Opus in alche-
my. With a nod to Victorian
novels, the exhibition title
suggests the beginning of
an elaborate journey full of
fantasy and drama for the
protagonist. References to
Jung, archetypes and the
collective
unconscious
abound in the show.

Hidden talent
Nguyen Quoc Hung
is relatively unknown in
international art circles.
Born in 1950, he is a self-
taught artist who has qui-
etly painted at his home
on Hang Thung street for
decades. This exhibition
represents a rare chance
to view artworks spanning
the many stages of his cre-
ative development.

One Planet
In collaboration with
Hanoi Grapevine and Galerie
Quynh, Manzi art space is
showcasing the One Planet
exhibit by visual artist Nguy-
en Manh Hung - one of Viet-
nam’s most important young
artists. One Planet features
Hung’s new sculptural instal-
lations and a series of paint-
ings that the artist refers to
as Mauvais Gout, meaning
bad taste.
Drawing from his own
personal history growing
up in a cramped Soviet style
apartment block in Hanoi,
Hung reflects on the idea of
community, the conflicts that
exist within and without con-
structed societies, and the
complexities of civic develop-
ment and individual responsi-
bility. Born in Hanoi in 1976,
Hung has exhibited in a num-
ber of regional and interna-
tional exhibitions including
the ARKO Art Center, Seoul,
Korea and the Yerba Buena
Center for the Arts, San Fran-
cisco, California, USA.
One Planet will be on
display at Manzi Art Space,
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi from
6 to 28 July 2013
.
