hu Dau is a peaceful village
on the right bank of Thai
Binh River, in Nam Sach dis-
trict, Hai Duong province,
70km from Hanoi.
Long simply a farming village, it
was anonymous among many others
until a chance discovery in 1980. It was
then that Makato Anabuki, secretary of
the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, saw
a 54cm high vase displayed in Taka-
pisaray (Istanbul, Turkey). This kind of
objects is covered by a shining layer of
blue enamel. An inscription on the vase
read “Made in the 8th reign of Thai

CRAFT REVIVAL
Chu Dau pottery was at its peak the 14th-17th century, but then fell into
obscurity. Today, however, this ancient craft is being revitalized and is
showing valuable export and tourism potential.
