A
nyone looking to discover more
about Hanoi’s traditional crafts
should head down to a Trang
Tien bookstore and pick up a
copy of the excellent and informative
Discovering Craft Villages in Vietnam by
Nicholas Stedman and Sylvie Fanchette,
which comes with suggestions for itiner-
aries. Armed with this and my own local
knowledge I set off from the capital.
The first stop on my tour was the
oldest and most attractive craft village of
Hanoi, the Bat Trang Pottery Village. The
village is home to some amazingly well-
preserved centuries-old architecture.
Alongside visiting the ancient relics and
watching all the steps the craftsmen go
through to craft the perfect pot, visitors
can also shop and make their own pots
here. After hitting the shops I took a rest
at one of the many small tea houses to
enjoy a cup of hoa soi herbal tea.
