orporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) starts with the leaders
of a company - its directors
and senior management. Our
first chairman, and one of the found-
ing shareholders of Vietnam Indus-
trial Investments Limited, Simon Lee,
initiated some of our first charitable
programs, kicking off our CSR culture.
The first programs we established were
funded by the Vinausteel University
Trust. One assists children with aca-
demic ability, but no financial means,
to fund their university study. Another,
the Red Cross program, provides voca-
tional training to kids with physical and
mental handicaps.
The charitable programs have con-
tinued and expanded over the years.
We have found that our staff like to take
part in these; for example, many of our
staff travel to Quy Nhon every year to
help distribute aid to the poor.
Social activities are an important
part of our company’s human resource
programs. We organise various sporting
competitions every year which are sup-
ported with much enthusiasm. Football
is the number one sport and we have
inter-departmental and inter-company
competitions. There are also sports days
to celebrate special days with badmin-
ton and tug-of-war competitions.
We also have programs to reward
staff with overseas travel, to recognise
their achievements and give them ex-
posure to other cultures. The company
has taken staff, and customers to Aus-
tralia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan
and the US.
Our programs are almost all target-
ed to benefit children. Children are the
future of any country and if they miss
the opportunity when they are young
then it is difficult for them to obtain an
education later in life.
We’d say that our programs have
positive benefits for society as we do
provide help to children who may oth-
erwise not get any. The need is great
and we cannot help all of those that
need it. If we consider the question
“Should we help if we cannot help all
those that need it?” our answer is “Yes,
it is better to help a few than not help
at all.” Fortunately, there are other com-
panies and organisations that provide
assistance.
Swing for the Kids appealed to our
directors as a worthwhile program to
