Thua Thien Hue prov-
ince’s Phu Bai airport will
close for eight-months, deal-
ing a blow to hotels in the
region. However, some ex-
pect the alternative option
of travelling via neighbour-
ing Danang airport will help
mitigate the impacts.
Vietnam Airlines has an-
nounced that it will halt fly-
ing to Phu Bai from April 1.
Patrick Fernandez, gen-
eral manager of Best West-
ern Indochine Palace Hotel,
said he had known of the
closure since late last year.
He says it will certainly cause
a drop in hotel occupancy in
the area, but the affect will
not be too drastic.
However, he is confi-
dent that since it is closing
for such a long period, the
hotel has plans to overcome
the situation by offering val-
ue added benefits, such as
special transfers from Dan-
ang and special room rates.
“Some
independent
travellers, businesses and
online businesses will be
effected due to airport clo-
sure,” said Fernadez.
But he added: “All
groups which are booked
will still continue to come.
We do have many groups
coming from Danang and
returning to Danang which
will not be effected at all.
The domestic and regional
market business generally
comes by land so that will
remain steady.”
He said many tour opera-
tors had requested for special
offers during this airport clo-
sure period and as the hotel
had known the situation ear-
lier, special rates have been
already sent months back.
“It would have been
nice if Vietnam airlines of-
fered some special rates for
passengers arriving for Hue
but land in Danang. I have
also discussed with the Hue
hotel association about set-
ting up a welcome desk for
Hue at the Danang airport
with professional staff to
provide a meet and assist
service for guests arriving
for Hue in Danang.”
