Made in Hanoi
Made in Hanoi, a group
painting exhibition, is set
to open in Hanoi on Febru-
ary 13. It will feature 13
artists: Chu Viet Cuong, Do
Hiep, Pham Quang Hieu,
Le Chi Hieu, Nguyen Van
Ho, Trinh Ngoc Lien, Trieu
Long, Pham Tuan Tu, Trinh
Minh Tien, Nguyen Thanh
Son, Nguyen Hoang Tung,
Luong Trung and Vu Duc
Trung. Each artist will con-
tribute their latest two art-
works. They cover a broad
range of styles and work
across many media, from
oils to lacquer. The com-
mon theme tying the show
together is the artists’ love
for Hanoi, where each of
them is lives and works.

Tokyo Jazz club
The Japan Foundation
and CAMA Vietnam are to
present the internation-
ally famous Japanese jazz
group, Soil & “Pimp” Ses-
sions in Hanoi this March.
The event marks the 40th
anniversary of diplomatic
ties between Japan and Vi-
etnam and the Japan – Vi-
etnam Friendship Year. Soil
& “Pimp” Sessions combine
world class musicianship
with the coolest of sounds
and attitude into a heady
mix of jazz, fun and en-
tertainment. Joining Soil
& “Pimp” Sessions in Ha-
noi will be local jazz-funk
group, Nga tu Mat dien.

The Vietnam-Japan Cul-
ture Exchange Festival 2013
will be held in February. The
festival aims to help young
people learn more about Vi-
etnamese and Japanese cul-
tures through music, perfor-
mances, cartoons, dances,
games and comics.
A Cosplay TOUCH
competition will be held to
prepare for Vietnam’s par-
ticipation in the World Cos-
play Competition in Japan
in August 2013.
The festival will feature
25 stalls offering discounted
books, souvenirs, and toys,
as well as favourite foods
from both countries. The
event is expected to attract
about 15,000 youngsters
from Ho Chi Minh City and
the neighbouring areas.

Bubble records
Vietnam is the first
stop on this year’s around
the world tour by world-re-
nowned bubble artist, Fan
Yang. The Vietnamese-born
Canadian has set 17 Guin-
ness World Records and
already made three visits
Vietnam to perform. Last
September, Yang broke his
own world record by creat-
ing a giant bubble to enclose
181 people in Canada’s Van-
couver City.

The Asia Super Show-
case takes place in Viet-
nam and Malaysia. Three
K-pop bands, Supper Jun-
ior-M, EXO-M and BTOB
will perform. EXO-M is a
Chinese-South Korean boy
band whose debut single,
Mama, won them a host
of awards around the re-
gion. BTOB (Born to Beat)
consists of Eun Kwag, Min
Hyuk, Chang Sub, Hyun
Sik, Peniel, Il Hoon and
Sung Jae. BtoB is making
waves on the Korean music
scene with two hit songs
– ‘Insane’ and the ballad,
‘Imagine’.

Book Road
Festival
The 2013 Book Road
Festival themed ‘Books
and 54 Ethnic Groups’ will
be held along the main
city streets of Ho Chi
Minh City, including Mac
Thi Buoi, Nguyen Hue and
Ngo Duc Ke.
The festival will of-
fer readers over 230 ti-
tles focused on Vietnam’s
ethnic groups, including
their history, traditional
customs, food and folk
games.
Another
highlight
of the festival will be an
exhibition of maps and
other documents on Vi-
etnam’s sovereignty over
its national waters and is-
lands, including over 200
titles and 1,000 books
selected by the National
Border Committee and
the General Science Li-
brary City.
The festival will also
show children’s titles, e-
books and braille books.
From Feruary 7 to 13,

Evolving senses
‘Primitive Eyes’ is the lat-
est installation by artist, Tran
Duc Quy. Quy believes that
over the decades, human be-
ings have lost some of their
instincts – the senses that
help them cope with disas-
ters and dangers. Through
this work he aims to capture
these senses through imag-
es of strange creatures with
many eyes walking among
us as if in a dream.

One Planet
A new exhibition at
Galerie Quynh features new
work by Nguyen Manh Hung
– one of Vietnam’s most im-
portant young artists. One
Planet is the artist’s first solo
exhibition in Ho Chi Minh
City. A multi-disciplinary
artist, widely known for his
paintings depicting military
fighter jet aircraft, Nguyen
will present new sculptural
installations in this major
exhibition that expands on
his previous two dimension-
al works. Born in Hanoi in
1976, Nguyen Manh Hung
has exhibited in a number
of regional and international
exhibitions, including the
Goethe-Institut, Hanoi, Viet-
nam; ARKO Art Center, Seoul,
Korea; ifa Galleries, Berlin
and Stuttgart, Germany;
Stenersenmuseet, Oslo, Nor-
way; ZKM Center for Art and
Media; Karlsruhe, Germany;
and the Yerba Buena Center
for the Arts, San Francisco,
California, USA. Nguyen’s
diorama Living in Paradise is
currently being featured in
the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial
of Contemporary Art at the
Queensland Art Gallery
