DINING OUT
S
ince opening in 1997, Tandoor
has been one of the most popu-
lar Indian restaurants in Ho Chi
Minh City. Like its sister restau-
rants - Tandoor and India Palace in Ha-
noi - the Saigon favourite uses tradi-
tional tandoor style cooking, like that
used in India’s north.
According to Taj Mohammad,
manager of the restaurant, a tandoor
is a traditional clay oven which uses
charcoal to create many of the most
famous Indian dishes and accompa-
niments, including kebabs and nan
breads. At Tandoor, customers are of-
fered a diverse array of authentic Indi-
an cuisines and a comfortable setting,
with the soft yellow lighting sound
tracked by Indian music.
The varied menu can please any
gourmet, with more than 200 drinks and
dishes, including soups, deserts, raita,
salad, kebabs, vegetarian options, chick-
en curries, mutton and byriani rice.
“Tandoori chicken is one of our
best dishes. The chicken is marinated in
ground fresh spices and yoghurt, then
grilled in the tandoor oven,” says Mo-
hammad. “Besides, our customers have
the largest choice of vegetarian options
and Halal meats, which are all suitable
for Muslims.”
One of the typical dishes suggested
for vegetarians is the special malai kofta,
which is prepared with a cashew nut-
based gravy.
Mohammad says his Indian chefs
have more than 17 years of experience
between them and each of them takes
care of their own section to make sure
that the dishes are served with the
best taste.
“Indian dishes are unique, since each
has around seven types of natural spices.
Therefore, Indian cuisine is an unforget-
table experience for many,” says Mo-
hammad. “50 per cent of our guests are
Indian, while the rest are other expats
and tourists”.
“Alongside the best crew, we also
have a very good location which is con-
venient for tourists. Our capacity is only
100 guests; however, we do not plan to
build another branch in Ho Chi Minh City
because we want to bring our customers
the best dishes”.
Understanding the busy life of the
city’s citizens, Tandoor also provides
a free home delivery service. Just dial
Tandoor and get your favourite dishes
brought to your door.
