Buildings impact directly and indirectly on their surrounding environment, as during their construction and over the course of their lifetime they draw huge volumes of energy, water, and raw materials. Aside from these demands on finite resources, they also emit a certain amount of harmful gases into the atmosphere. The negative impact of inefficient buildings has motivated the development of green, energy- and resource-efficient buildings on a global scale.

In a rapidly urbanising Vietnam, buildings consume about 36 per cent of the nation’s energy, and produce about one third of its carbon dioxide emissions. As such, they make up a significant part of the country’s overall carbon footprint.

Vietnam is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries in terms of climate variability and change. Current global emission trends, leading to the world becoming 4°C warmer by 2100, will dramatically increase the country’s vulnerabilities to climate-related threats, such as increased incidences of natural disasters and rising sea levels.
