5-Selected International Short Films from Berlinale 2015

12 and 13 Oct 2015, 7 pm
Culture Salon Cafe thứ bảy

A selection of short films of the Berlin International Film Festival 2015 is travelling to Asia as part of the “Berlinale Shorts Go Abroad” series of events. In Vietnam, the Goethe-Institut will present ten exclusive short films from six different countries. The movie screenings will take place on two different occasions at the Culture Salon Café thứ bảy. After that, the films will continue their journey to Hanoi and Hue before moving on to other countries in Southeast Asia.

The Berlinale Shorts films are uncompromising and complex, and offer an undisguised image of the present. Berlinale Shorts curator Maike Mia Höhne is especially pleased to bring this particular form of movie to Vietnam for yet another time. For her, the value of these short films lies in their connection of fiction and reality. They open up space for interpretation and communication, going beyond the events that actually take place.

This year’s edition features many different styles of film, from documentaries to fictional stories and animated movies. Central themes are personal life stories and rituals portraying longing, love, cruelty and the absurd. Some of the films provide food for thought, others open up a whole new world to the viewer. They show life on another planet, but also the earthly dangers emanating from humans and the power of nature. One movie, shot in a Syrian refugee camp, critically examines the position of the filmmaker: an outside observer, eager to tell a story, he is at the same time forced to encounter the refugees’ reality.

Momoko Set’s short film “Planet Sigma” is bound to be a particular highlight: Using extreme macro and slow motion shots, the Japanese director manages to create a unique new world.

The Berlin International Film Festival, more commonly known as Berlinale, ranks among the most important film festivals in the world. Movies of all genres, lengths and formats are awarded. Since 2007, the Berlinale Shorts also awards prizes to short films, mostly works of talented young artists.

Free admission.

21-German Dance “Zweiland” in Festival “Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance” 2015

02 and 03 Oct 2015, 8 pm
Hanoi Opera House
1 Trang Tien, Hanoi

Within the framework of the festival “Europe meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2015”, the Compagnie Sasha Waltz & Guests comes to Hanoi to stage their piece “Zweiland”. The performance of the internationally successful company founded by renowned choreographer Sasha Waltz is a great highlight of this year’s festival.

In Zweiland (Twin Lands) – premiered in Berlin in 1997 – Sasha Waltz interweaves poetic images of German mythology with the music of different centuries. With humor and melancholy, the choreographer deals with the recent German history and studies in a poetic approach the theme “Images of Germany”. Social relations are shown on the interpersonal level and thus are directly experienced: togetherness and discord, despair and hope, separation and consolidation. Absurd everyday situations alternate with character studies and fairy-tale images. German songs from different centuries are interpreted by the performers themselves and let music and dance merge into one.

Sasha Waltz is the internationally most renowned German choreographer of her generation. Sasha Waltz & Guests was founded by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig in Berlin in 1993. To date, more than 300 artists – architects, visual artists, choreographers, filmmakers, designers, musicians, singers and dancers – from 25 countries have appeared as “guests” in more than 80 dance-theater pieces, operas, films and other projects. Sasha Waltz & Guests works with an international, constantly developing network of production partners and guest performers. She has acquired international reputation for the development of innovative forms in the choreographic music theater. In 2013, her company was officially appointed “Cultural Ambassador of the European Union”.

28-French Dance “Nos Solitudes” in “Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance” 2015

Hanoi: Wed 30 Sep 2015, 8 pm
Youth Theatre

HCMC: Fri 02 Oct 2015, 8 pm
Drama Theater HCMC

You are invited to the French dance “Nos Solitudes” under the framework of Contemporary Dance 2015 “Europe Meets Asia”.

Until “Nos Solitudes”, we believe that our body is balanced by its weight. And once suspended, the body has no reason or way to move. Julie Nioche proves otherwise. By her own impulses, subtly mastered, she generates the necessary energy that allows the body to rise, move, curl, levitate, wave, etc.

“Nos Solitudes” provides a new relationship between the body with space and gravity. The experience of solitude brings dance into a theatrical metaphor of our ties, our relationship and our support.

For this performance, Julie Nioche received the Jury Prize in 2010 of the Trade Union of Music and Dance Theater criticism.
