Viet Nam demands China to immediately stop the construction on Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, FM Spokesman Le Hai Binh made the statement at a regular press conference on May 28.

Answering a reporter’s question about Viet Nam’s response to China’s start of the construction of two lighthouses on Truong Sa islands, the FM asserted that Viet Nam has sufficient legal and historical evidence to prove its sovereignty over the two archipelagos.

China’s construction of the two lighthouses violates Viet Nam’s sovereignty and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), which was signed between ASEAN and China in 2002.

Viet Nam asked China to strictly follow and execute international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 and the DOC, as well as prevent any activities that complicate the East Sea situation, he added.
