Today Vietnam celebrates the anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945) and its National Day (September 2) commemorating the historical milestones to independence and taking full pride in the outstanding socio-economic development achievements over the past years.

President Truong Tan Sang in his speech at the parade recalled September 2, 1945 when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, declaring the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam over the past 70 years, the Vietnamese people have stayed united and have overcome numerous adversities to defend their national sovereignty independence, freedom and territorial integrity.

Sang added that the success of the August Revolution not only marked the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, but also provided valuable lessons for the Vietnamese people.

This morning, the grand parade was held with the participation of around 30,000 people at the capital’s Ba Dinh Square to commemorate the 70th anniversary of these important events.

Furthermore, a spectacular 21-gun salute was also part of the programme on the square to celebrate the National Day.

Sharing her feelings with VIR, 24- year-old Pham Thi Hau, living in Hanoi’s Nguyen Thai Hoc street, shared that “the grand parade is so impressive and it reminden me that I am so proud of being a Vietnamese.”

Meanwhile, war veteran Dang Duc Khanh said that he felt extremely proud of being among the live witnesses to the historical events 70 years ago when the entirety of Ba Dinh Square was flooded with flowers, flags and people.

“When marching in line with my comrades-in-arms across the main podium and passing streets crowded with so many spectators, I was very happy for being a citizen of an independent country,” Khanh said.

In addition to the military parade, a series of commemorations and celebrations will be organised across the country to mark the important events during the day. These events include art performances, exhibitions of books and materials on the August Revolution, a national film festival week, publication of a stamp collection on the theme, as well as a photo book on the 70 years of the national development, among others.
