Trial of Tram Be case started

On January 8, 2018, the trial of “intentionally violating state regulations on economic management and causing serious consequences” at Vietnam Construction Bank (VNCB), Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Sacombank), Tien Phong Bank (TPBank), and Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) started.

According to the jury, Pham Cong Danh, who is also ex-chairman of the Board of Members and general director of Thien Thanh Group, played a key role in directing other defendants to conduct illegal behaviours for an extended period of time, causing a total economic loss of over VND9 trillion ($396 million) for VNCB.

The violation affected the rights and obligations of hundreds of organisations and individuals. 45 of the major organisations affected include:

  45. State Bank’s judicial expertise group consists eight members (Ho Quang Binh, Le Duc Khoi, Tran The Quynh, Nguyen Dinh Hieu, Than Ngoc Thang, Vo Thi Thu Ha, Nguyen Thi Huong, Vu Huy Quang).

Ealier on January 24 last year, at the first instance hearing, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s High Court upheld the sentence of 30-year imprisonment to former VNCB chairman Pham Cong Danh for “deliberately violating state regulations on economic management causing severe consequences” and “violating lending regulations of credit institutions.”
