Toyota Motor Vietnam (TMV) on Friday begins recalling its Camry 2.4, Vios G and Corolla Altis 1.8 and 2.0 cars whose gearboxes were filled with wrong fluids.

With approval from Vietnam Register, the carmaker will recall 72 units of Camry 2.4, Corolla Altis 1.8 and 2.0, and Vios G and replace their automatic transmission gearboxes at all its Toyota dealerships nationwide.

The recall came as the cars were provided with wrong fluids on the TMV assembly line. Camry 2.4 and Vios G are designed to use AT fluid for their gearboxes but they were filled with continuous variable transmission (CVT) fluid, while CVT fluid was intended for Corolla 1.8 and 2.0 but AT fluid was used instead.

According to TMV, Camry and Vios AT models filled with CVT fluid may face vibration while gear is changed, while a conveyor belt slip and an abnormal noise may occur in the gearbox of the Corolla. In the latter case, if customers continue to use these vehicles, the CVT belt may be cut and the gearbox will got stuck.

The owners of the 72 affected vehicles will receive a notice about the recall and they are advised to take their vehicles to TMV’s dealership network for free gearbox check and replacement.

It takes six hours to complete gearbox checks and replacements for Camry 2.4, almost seven hours for Corolla Atlis 1.8 and 2.0, and four hours and a half for Vios G.
