Thousands flock to Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

Thousands of visitors were recorded flocking to many famous destinations in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta on Wednesday, the third day of the Lunar New Year.

Officials in several tourism hotspots of the area, namely the islets of Thoi Son, Phung, Quy and others in Tien Giang and Ben Tre Provinces, reported that the number of visitors increased by 30 percent compared to that of normal days, causing many services to be always packed with tourists.

Phan Van Thong, Director of Con Phung (Phung Islet) tourist area in Ben Tre, said that about 3,000 travelers visited the site on Wednesday, up by 30 percent compared to the average number of daily visitors.

As per common Vietnamese practice, people usually visit their family members in the first and second day of the Lunar New Year and will start their trips on the third and fourth day, resulting in a significant increase in number of tourists Director Thong explained.

Vietnam’s Lunar New Year begins in February 8 with preparation and celebration commonly taking place one week before and after the date.

He added that more international visitors have also come to the Mekong Delta this year compared to previous ones.

Many tourist boats have been working at full capacity due to the hike in number of vacationers.

Visitors coming from Ho Chi Minh City mainly travel by buses, causing many bus stops to be overloaded and traffic congestion.
