For people in Bay Nui (Seven Mountains) region in Tri Ton and Tinh Bien districts of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang, sugar palm trees are an important part of their life.

The initial purpose of Khmer ethnic people in the area to grow the plant is to prevent erosion but over time, sugar palm has become a major source of income for locals because they can turn its sweet juice into sugar, get its fruit for household use or sale, and make handicrafts from its leaves.

Visitors to Tinh Bien and Tri Ton can easily see sugar palm trees everywhere and buy palm products at stalls and bistros in the places they drop by.
