The tropical storm called Mirinae hit Vietnam with heavy rain and intensive gusts, causing landfalls in the northern cities and provinces on the night of July 27.

The heavy rain caused flash floods, landslides, and floods in low-lying areas of the northern midland and mountainous regions.

In cities and provinces in the north, including Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, and especially Hanoi, the heavy rain and intense wind gusts toppled trees and cut power lines, disrupting traffic and causing blackouts.

In Hanoi, numerous streets were submerged in water. The worst hit streets were Giai Phong, Pham Van Dong, Phan Van Truong, Truong Chinh, Giap Bat, Hoang Mai, Thai Ha, Nguyen Trai, Dinh Cong, Nguyen Xien, among others. In addition, uprooted trees fell on cars, causing serious accidents.

According to the latest news, the storm killed one person and injured five others on the morning of July 28.

On the morning of July 28, Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Airlines had to delay a total of 16 flights departing from Noi Bai international airport. Vietnam Airlines had to canceled six flights.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in next 12 hours, the storm will move toward the west-northwest with an average speed of between 10 and 15 kilometre per hour and then weakens into a low pressure area.

Previously, the storm with damaging winds and flooding rains hit China’s Hainan province before heading towards northern Vietnam. The winds with a speed of 100km per hour were strong enough to uproot trees and bring down some power lines, causing some travel disruption in the process.

According to the local authorities, more than 3,000 people were evacuated from their homes ahead of the storm which cleared Hainan late on July 26.

Flights at Haikou Meilan international airport and Sanya Phoenix international airport suffered delays. Meanwhile more than 25,000 fishing vessels in Hainan had been anchored in the harbour.
