Thanh Tung reports from the celebrations of Singapore National Day held at Bishan Active Park, documenting a refreshing mixture of national pride, environmental awareness, and multiculturalism.
I have been to the beautiful Singapore for six times, but this visit is the most interesting because I had the chance to take part in Singapore’s National Day celebrations on August 9.
Singapore is far more than the sum of its numerous attractions. It is constantly evolving, reinventing and reimagining itself, with people who are passionate about creating new possibilities. They always take pride in their nation.
Singapore is where foodies, explorers, collectors, thrill seekers, culture vultures, and social butterflies meet―and live new experiences every day.
We woke up early before taking a car to Bishan Active Park, where the Bishan North National Day Observance Ceremony is organised. Thousands of people of all ages have gathered on the scene. They are jubilantly chatting with one another, playing games, and engaging in art performances. Notably, everyone wears a red T-shirt and holds a national flag in their hands. People queue in order to get tickets free-of-charge.
I am also given a ticket which I can use to exchange for a T-shirt, a can of soft drink, a pack of snacks, and a set of small ceramic plates as souvenirs.
The ceremony is attended by Josephine Teo, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Home Affairs. At the event, people loudly repeat the Singapore National Pledge.
The event also takes time to educate people about environmental protection and climate change, and treasuring our natural habitat.

In the afternoon of August 9 at the Marina Bay area, the National Day Parade took place. It started off like a full house rock concert, with about 30,000 spectators and a stage that erupted in flashing lights and a twanging electric guitar solo. The most exciting activity was the aircraft show and then the fire works. I have never witnessed such a fascinating scene.
