Military port operator Saigon New Port officially won the leasing contract to run the Cai Mep container terminal at Cai Mep-Thi Vai International Terminal, funded by Japanese official development assistance.

The group has signed the leasing contract with the Vietnam Maritime Administration. This is the second container terminal operated by Saigon New Port at the Cai Mep-Thi Vai complex, the key gateway for import and exports in the south of Vietnam.

The container terminal has a 600 metre-berth accommodating vessels of up to 110,000 dead weight tonnes. According to the maritime administration, total investment into the terminal was $291.4 million with a capacity of 600,000 twenty foot equivalent units a year.

Last July the Ministry of Transport approved a plan to lease two berths of the international terminal in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province which were inaugurated in January 2013.

According to the Ministry of Transport this was a solution to help the state more quickly recoup its investment capital, it added that operators that offer the highest price and with the best business plans would win the tender.

There are currently five terminals operating in the complex including the Cai Mep International Terminal, SP-PSA International Port and SP-SSA International Container Terminal, jointly invested in by state-run Vinalines and Denmark’s APM Terminals BV, and Singapore’s PSA International and the US’ SSA Marines, respectively. The other terminals are Saigon New Port’s Tan Cang-Cai Mep Container Terminal and Hutchison Port Holdings’ Saigon International Terminals.
