Prisoners freed for National Day

As many as 15,446 domestic and foreign prisoners nationwide will be released today thanks to a Presidential amnesty to mark National Day on Monday.

Another 77 who are temporarily suspended from serving sentences will also be allowed to stay free.

At a press briefing in Ha Noi yesterday, the Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Giang Son, said the move was made in a careful, transparent and fair manner, ensuring democracy throughout the process.

Prescribed in Viet Nam's Constitution and institutionalised by the 2007 Law on Amnesty, Son said the decision mirrored the Party and State policy of clemency and the humane tradition of the nation.

Son said prisoners who had made good rehabilitation progress were eligible for a pardon.

Among those being freed are 1,842 women, including 16 foreigners.

Four had been charged with acting against national security.
