Preparations on track for APEC Danang

Vietnamse President Tran Dai Quang lauded the work of government agencies and the authorities of Danang to prepare for the APEC Summit 2017 and asked that they ensure a secure and successful event that would show to the world a good image of Vietnam.

The president made the statement at the working session on April 18 between him, the National Committee for APEC 2017, and leaders of Danang city on the preparation for the APEC Summit.

The Summit will be held in Danang between November 6 and 11. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, deputy chairman of the committee, said that all components, namely content, reception, security-healthcare, supplies-logistics, and propaganda-culture, are moving according to schedule. Participants of the first Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM1) and related meetings in Nha Trang in February 2017 said that they were pleased with the preparation on Vietnam’s side in all aspects.

Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Deputy Chairman of the Danang People’s Committee, said that the city has set up an organising board under the leadership of its chairman, and the projects being built to serve the Summit will be completed in June.

“Danang is aware of the importance of this event and considers it a very precious opportunity. We are doing our very best to make sure that there will be no shortcomings, especially in terms of security during the week,” Huynh Duc Tho, Chairman of the Danang People’s Committee, said.

President Quang said hosting APEC 2017 is one of the primary focuses of external affairs of the Communist Party and the government in this new period, not only in 2017.

It is a chance to show that the Communist Party and the government are actively working on integrating into the world, to enhance multilateral relations and bilateral relations with other economies and regional and global partners in order to contribute to Vietnam’s growth and enhance its position in the world.

Therefore, according to Quang, Vietnam in general and Danang in particular have to make this year’s APEC a resounding success. “It should be courteous but efficient, not extravagant but showing that Vietnam is modernising, proactive in integrating with the world, friendly, and has good security,” he said.

He said he highly valued the preparatory work of government agencies and the cities, especially Danang and its companies.

However, “Danang should ensure that the facilities to serve the APEC events are finished on schedule and with good quality, ensure food safety, and minimise crime to make a good impression on tourists,” he said.

He added that even if the event sprouts valuable agreements, if security is not ensured, it is not a success.

Therefore, he asked the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Public Security to ensure security in the city in the sky, in the sea, and on land, and protect the areas where the activities are held, as well as ensure traffic safety when delegates move from one location to another.

He also said that the people in charge of spreading the information should make sure that all Vietnamese know the meaning and significance of APEC 2017 and the summit week in Danang, so that they can feel it as their own responsibility and work together with the government to serve APEC 2017.

Before the working session, Quang, the committee, and the authorities of Danang visited some construction projects that would serve APEC Danang 2017, such as the hall to welcome the heads of the delegations, the main conference room, the location of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting and the CEO Summit at InterContinental Danang, Sheraton Danang Resort, Ariyana Danang Exhibition and Convention Centre, the international terminal of Danang International Airport, and the International Press Centre.
