The Prime Minister (PM) has requested the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport as well as relevant agencies, to appraise the Dong Nai People’s Committee’s proposal to alter land compensation policies to implement Long Thanh international airport.

According to newswire Vneconomy.vn, the PM will give the final decision after receiving the ministries’ appraisal.

Previously, the Dong Nai People’s Committee proposed the PM a series of unprecedented land compensation policies, which support the completion of the site clearance at the new giant Long Thanh international airport by 2019.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said at the working session with provincial leaders in July that it is necessary to provide special policies for the project because, according to a report of ministries and Dong Nai province, by normal procedures, the province will have to wait until 2018 to be able to license and hand over the grounds to the investor, effectively preventing the first phase of Long Thanh airport from coming into commercial operation in 2025, as planned.

In June 2016, the national assembly approved implementing the construction of Long Thanh international airport. The project’s construction will cover an area of 5,000 hectares in the six communes of Binh Son, Suoi Trau, Cam Duong, Long An, Long Phuoc, and Bau Can in Long Thanh district.

Long Thanh airport is scheduled to be constructed on an area of 2,750 hectares, accounting for 55 per cent of the total 5,000 hectares set aside for the project. Once it is put into operation in 2025, the airport will meet the 4F standard of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, taking a huge step towards becoming an international passenger and cargo transit centre in the region.
