PM Dung appreciated the UN’s support and assistance for socioeconomic development, social progress, poverty reduction, and improvement of living standards in Viet Nam.

The Government chief affirmed that Viet Nam will spare no effort to expand cooperation in a practical and effective manner with the UN while calling on the UN to continue its policy consultancy in order to help the country improve its capacity in designing high quality and feasible programs, projects and millennium development goals.

PM Dung also affirmed that Viet Nam stands ready to work with the UN and the international community to fruitfully realize commitments and action plans for sustainable development, including post-2015 ones, for peace and prosperity in the region and the world.

He announced that Viet Nam will send a high-level delegation to attend the international conference on financing for sustainable development, which is scheduled to take place in July this year.

UN Secretary General Ban highly valued Viet Nam’s commitments and contributions to the development of the UN and global peace.

Regarding the East Sea issue, Mr. Ban said the UN has closely followed the situation in the East Sea. He called on relevant parties to refrain from taking actions that may escalate tension, respect and comply with international law, and soon conclude a code of conduct in the East Sea.

He said the UN is ready to join multilateral talks to address the issue.

Mr. Ban also shared the stances and serious concerns of Viet Nam, ASEAN and G7 countries over the ongoing large-scale land reclamation activities that aim to change the status quo in the East Sea. These activities violate international law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, erode trust among countries, and seriously threaten peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea and the region.

He also voiced support for Viet Nam’s position to request parties to ensure full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea in order to build, maintain and consolidate mutual trust. Divergences and disputes need to be settled through peaceful measures in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Mr. Ban is now on a two-day visit to Viet Nam from May 22-23 at the invitation of State President Truong Tan Sang on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN.

On Saturday, he is expected to meet with Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh, attend the inaugural ceremony of UN Common House and the 1st anniversary of the Viet Nam Peacekeeping Center.
