PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc warned of undercurrents and potential maritime risks that could threaten stability in the region.

The Government chief shared the view while attending the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Sydney, Australia on March 18.

Maritime cooperation must comply with international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the rule of law must be the foundation for building trust and maintaining stability in the region, PM Phuc emphasized.

Countries need to have comprehensive approach to maritime cooperation, from security to environmental protection and maritime studies, he added.

PM Phuc welcomed the efforts of Viet Nam, Australia and the European Union to co-chair the Working Group of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) on maritime security for the period 2018-2020 as planned, in order to contribute to boosting peace, cooperation and trust building in the region.

He alaos stated Viet Nam welcomed Pacific-India cooperation and connectivity initiatives towards a common vision for an open region where ASEAN can promote its central role in accelerating cooperation for security and prosperity for all.

On the sidelines of the Summit, PM Phuc had bilateral meetings with Cambodian PM Samdech Hun Sen, Thai PM Pryut Chan-o-cha, Malaysian PM Najib Razak, Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong, and Myanmar’s State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.
