PM Nguyen Tan Dung has extended his sympathies and condolences to people who have had their relatives and property lost due to torrential rains and floods sweeping through several Northern provinces over the past days.

As torrential rains are forecast to continue in the next few days, PM Dung tasked relevant ministries, agencies and localities to cope with and quickly overcome the consequences of the adverse national disasters, timely provide food aid and medicines to needed areas.

They need to enhance information dissemination to instruct people to actively cope with sudden floods.

Torrential rains began in Quang Ninh a few days ago, triggering severe floods, disrupting transportation in the province, and killing at least 15 people. The unusual rainfall of 574mm to 828mm caused losses of more than VND1 trillion (US$45.8 million) in Quang Ninh, the local authorities estimated.

Around 1,500 tourists were stranded on Co To Island, off the Northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh, as the popular tourist destination was lashed by what may have been the heaviest rainfall in more than four decades on Monday.

The rainfall, which the local meteorology agency said is the heaviest in 40 years, damaged three main roads, shut down a clean water supply station on the island and destroyed a wide area of agriculture crops, according to the district chairman.

Heavy rains have started to fall across the Northern provinces, including Ha Noi since August 1.
