Vietnam and Japan have linked up to screw down the details of Vietnam’s industrialisation strategy.
After five working sessions, the two sides have drawn up a short list of 12 key industries with the most development potential in Vietnam up to 2020.

The industries include electronics, motorbikes, shipbuilding, food processing, steel, petrochemicals, garment and footwear, software, environmentally-friendly and energy-saving equipment, automobiles, heavy equipment and machinery, and farming machines.
Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh told the fifth working session in Hanoi last week: “We highly appreciate the cooperation of the embassy of Japan in Vietnam and of Japanese experts in building this strategy for Vietnam.â€
He said Vietnam’s industrialisation strategy was critical, particularly given Vietnam was restructuring its economy to improve competitiveness. He noted defining key industries during the industrialisation process was significant.
Professor Kenichi Ohno of Japan’s National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies suggested the number of industries considered as having the most potential to the end of this decade should be reduced to five or seven.
Over the years, Vietnam and Japan have seen big wins from their relationship, especially in terms of investment.
