Hanoi’s CPI rises only 0.96 per cent in January

Hanoians were more economical this year during the month before the Lunar New Year festival, resulting in a slower increase in the capital's consumer price index (CPI).

The Hanoi Statistics Office reports that the city’s CPI in January increased only 0.96 per cent over the previous month and 16.24 per cent against the same period last year – the lowest CPI increase in recent years.

According to the report, post and telecommunications and education saw no CPI increase.

The CPI for food rose 0.44 per cent and foodstuffs over 1.5 per cent.

Statisticians say that retail sales in January increased by nearly 4 per cent against December 2011.

There was also a rise in the price of warm clothing as Hanoi experienced a prolonged cold spell.
