Deputy Prime Minister asks Hanoi to boost parking
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 20 instructed capital authorities to continue carrying out measures to ensure traffic safety and order, focusing on building parking areas to meet local demand.
Phuc said he agrees with current measures, including the ban on parking along the pavements of 262 streets, the adjusting of school and working hours and the division of streets into separate lanes at a working session with the municipal People's Committee on traffic.
However, he said shortcomings remain in congestion prevention tasks and asked for more comprehensive and resolute direction from municipal authorities to reduce the number of death and injury related traffic accidents by 20 per cent, general traffic accidents by 30 per cent and traffic "black" spots by 70 per cent.
In the first two months of this year, Hanoi reported a 36.6 per cent year-on-year decrease in traffic accidents, 36.3 per cent in the number of traffic deaths and 23.1 per cent in the number of people injured in traffic accidents.
Phuc instructed municipal authorities to increase management over construction planning and the relocation of schools, hospitals and the headquarters of ministries and agencies to the suburbs of the city during 2012-15 as well as mobilise different sources in investing in traffic infrastructure.
It was further proposed that the Government issue policies and mechanisms to gradually manage and limit the use of private vehicles while increasing traffic fees as a capital source towards upgrading infrastructure.
