Microsoft technology helps Operation Smile heal more smiles in Vietnam

Microsoft and partner technology has helped Operation Smile heal more than 700 smiles during a surgical mission to Hanoi, November 17-23 through their donation of software, services, devices and equipment.

This mission marks Operation Smile’s first use of mobile technology and new electronic medical records in the field.

The international children’s medical charity provided free surgical procedures for cleft lip and palate in six mission sites across the country in recognition of the 25th anniversary of its first mission to Vietnam.

Using Microsoft Office 365, including Lync and Azure, 300 medical volunteers and surgical teams around the globe were able to communicate and collaborate in advance of the mission.

During the patient screening in Hanoi, Operation Smile’s medical volunteers used an electronic medical record system developed by Dublin-based Sláinte Healthcare to capture patient information on Asus Transformer 2-in-1 devices running Windows 8.

“It’s so gratifying to see how technology from Microsoft and our partners Sláinte Health, Synergy, Polycom and ASUS has helped Operation Smile extend its great work – they can do more and ultimately treat more kids in more regions,” said Paul Smolke, industry managing director, Microsoft Worldwide Health.
