The director of the Ministry of Transport's Viet Nam Maritime Administration (VMA), Nguyen Nhat, on Saturday issued the decision to create the office.

The new port authority location would help the VMA ensure freedom of navigation in line with Vietnamese law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Nhat said during a ceremony in Nha Trang. It would also help it manage shipping operations, he said.

Managing waters more closely demonstrates Viet Nam's presence in the sea areas it controls, helping safeguard the country's sovereignty and jurisdiction, he said.

Pham Van Chuong, director of the Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority, said the office would also co-ordinate with agencies on search-and-rescue missions and environmental prevention.

The VMA also announced the locations of the waters of all seaports belonging to the provincies of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan, and areas under management of the Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority.
