Internet grows to 339.8 million domain names in second quarter

VeriSign, Inc., a global leader in domain names and internet security, announced that the second quarter of 2018 closed with approximately 339.8 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs), an increase of approximately 6 million domain name registrations, or 1.8 per cent, compared to the first quarter of 2018. Domain name registrations have grown by approximately 7.9 million, or 2.4 per cent, year-on-year.

.com and .net breakdown

The .com and .net TLDs had a combined total of approximately 149.7 million domain name registrations in the domain name base at the end of the second quarter of 2018, an increase of approximately 1.4 million, or 0.9 per cent, compared to the first quarter of 2018. The .com and .net TLDs had a combined increase of approximately 5.3 million domain name registrations, or 3.7 per cent, year over year. As of June 30, 2018, the .com domain name base totalled approximately 135.6 million domain name registrations, while the .net domain name base totalled approximately 14.1 million registrations.

New .com and .net domain name registrations totalled approximately 9.6 million at the end of the second quarter of 2018, compared to 9.2 million registrations in the second quarter of 2017.

ccTLD breakdown

Total country-code TLD (ccTLD) domain name registrations were approximately 149.7 million at the end of the second quarter of 2018, an increase of approximately 3.5 million registrations, or 2.4 per cent, compared to the first quarter of 2018. ccTLDs increased by approximately 5.5 million domain name registrations, or 3.8 per cent, year-on-year. The top 10 ccTLDs, as of June 30, 2018, were:

New GTLD breakdown

Total new gTLDs (ngTLDs) domain name registrations were approximately 21.8 million at the end of the second quarter of 2018, an increase of approximately 1.6 million, or 7.9 per cent, compared to the first quarter of 2018. ngTLDs decreased by approximately 2.5 million registrations, or 10.4 per cent, year-on-year. The top 10 ngTLDs represented 51.2 per cent of all ngTLD domain name registrations. The following chart shows ngTLD domain name registrations as a percentage of overall TLD domain name registrations, of which they represent 6.4 per cent, as well as the top 10 ngTLDs as a percentage of all ngTLD domain name registrations for the second quarter of 2018.
