Yukiya Amano, General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is visiting Vietnam from January 7-11 to inspect IAEA-funded projects in the country.

He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and Deputy PM-cum-Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, and hold working sessions with a number of ministries.

Both sides will discuss ways to boost bilateral cooperation in application of atomic energy and Vietnam’s nuclear power programme.

He will inspect the construction site of the two nuclear power plants in Binh Thuan province.

Vietnam joined the IAEA in 1978 and it has well developed ties with this organisation. Vietnam was elected to the Board of Governors of the IAEA in 2013.

The government adopted the national strategy for nuclear power development for peaceful purposes in 2006.

The IAEA has approved funding for five Vietnamese projects over 2014-2015, focusing on infrastructure construction, nuclear power legislation, and nuclear technology applications in industry, agriculture, health care and the building of the two nuclear power plants.
