The year 2018 marks 45 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Singapore, with the countries joining forces to bring improvements to the lives of their people. As both countries continue to tighten their relationship with numerous political, trade, and people-to-people events held throughout the year, one specific area stands out in a very positive light: education.

Contribution to education

KinderWorld International Group has its roots in Singapore, with the 1986 establishment of Changi View Child Care Centre. In 2000, after 14 years of preschool operations experience, KinderWorld made inroads overseas and entered the Vietnamese market following the economic crash and liberalisation of the enterprise law. Leveraging the strength of the renowned Singaporean education brand, Ricky Tan established KinderWorld’s first preschool in Ho Chi Minh City. It was opened by then-Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is now Singapore’s prime minister. The opening ceremony demonstrated a positive step towards forging strong ties between Vietnam and Singapore through education.

This was to be the start of a progressive and sustained relationship between Vietnam and Singapore. KinderWorld is honoured to continue to play a modest role in leading the way in investing resources to promote human capital development across Vietnam, through its network of international pre-schools and international schools. Over the last 18 years, under the leadership of Tan, KinderWorld has established 15 campuses across eight cities and provinces in the country, becoming what is probably the largest network of international schools in Vietnam.

From 2008 to 2015, the group was awarded the Golden Dragon Awards by the Vietnam Economic Times five times, for being the premium international education provider in Vietnam. The group has consistently delivered table-topping results too. For example, a number of students from KinderWorld International Group schools consistently achieved excellent results in international examinations since 2009. Many KinderWorld students have continued their education in well established universities in the US, the UK, Australia, and Switzerland.

Solid brands under the Kinderworld International Group

Catering to multiple student segments with its suite of offerings, KinderWorld operates under the brand names of KinderWorld International Kindergarten (KIK), Singapore International School (SIS), and Singapore Vietnam International School (SVIS), with schools located in Hanoi, Halong, Danang, Nha Trang, Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and Can Tho.

KinderWorld International Kindergarten

KIK offers preschool education for children aged 18 months to six years, through the international and integrated programmes. Where appropriate, the strengths of the Singaporean and Australian early childhood education curricula are combined to provide a holistic education for the students. The programme is known to provide a strong foundation in the English language and mathematics. KIK focuses on the well rounded development of children and prepares them for success at primary schools, setting a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Singapore International School

At the core of KinderWorld’s offering is its holistic approach to providing students with a learning environment to stimulate their minds and develop an inquiring mind. SIS offers primary to high school education, also through the international and integrated programmes for foreign and Vietnamese students.

Accreditation and international benchmarks

SIS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), a world-renowned accrediting body and one of the six regional accreditation associations in the US. SIS is committed to continuously ensure the quality of its education programmes through well-known accreditation agencies. KinderWorld’s primary school students take the Singapore international Primary School Examination (iPSLE), while secondary students take the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations at the end of the primary and secondary school years, respectively. Students may choose to take the Cambridge International A-Level examinations, which prepare students for universities across the world or the Global Assessment Certificate University Foundation Programme (GAC), which provides access to many universities worldwide. The GAC also includes preparations for the American College Test.

SIS also offers an integrated programme, which is designed to meet the needs of Vietnamese students from year 1 to year 9. It provides them with an opportunity to study not only the mandatory government-mandated Vietnamese curriculum, but also some aspects of the international curriculum.

Extra-curricular activities as part of a holistic education

SIS also offers a range of extra-curricular activities organised by after-school clubs or enrichment courses, to build on students’ interests and talents. A popular enrichment class is the culinary course at Pegasus International College. These culinary courses enable our students to have a hands-on, fun experience in creating a variety of simple dishes of different cuisines and stimulate their interests in cooking and baking.

SIS also collaborates with Outward Bound Vietnam (OBV), an affiliate organisation under the KinderWorld Group, to develop students’ character and soft skills including perseverance, resilience, self-confidence, and team work by including experiential learning and adventure learning in the curriculum.

Contributing to the local community

KinderWorld promotes a strong sense of community, not only in its school, but in the wider community in which it operates. Since its establishment in Vietnam, the group has contributed nearly VND15 billion ($663,716) through charity events, competition sponsorships, scholarships, and numerous initiatives. SIS students are encouraged to participate in annual charitable activities such as the Christmas Fair and Nights of the Arts, which form an integral part of the school curriculum. Funds raised through these activities support charities like Operation Smile, which provides reconstructive facial surgery to children born with facial deformities and the Thuy An Rehabilitation Centre for handicapped children.

Sustainability

On the sustainability front, KinderWorld has built up its expertise in developing purpose-built international schools incorporating green architecture as one of its top priorities. One of the group’s Super School campuses, Singapore International School at Gamuda Gardens (Hanoi), incorporates sustainability and green architecture by maximising outdoor space for students and using recycled rain water. Moreover, school buildings are orientated at angles, and environmental building materials are used to minimise energy consumption.

Progressive regulatory environment

Vietnam’s supportive regulatory landscape has supported the growth of KinderWorld over the years. Progressive policies by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training, aimed to attract increasing international investment in education, have allowed businesses to expand and provide quality international education that is within reach for its growing population. With deep knowledge and understanding of both countries, KinderWorld seeks to offer in-demand, internationally accredited private education. By becoming one of the few major industry players to be certified and accredited by internationally recognised standards and benchmarks, KinderWorld caters to the growing segment of discerning families who wish for quality education for their children.
