Hanoian Duong Doan Anh Minh has become the winner of a painting competition on wildlife animals’ life in the circus in Vietnam, launched by the Hong Kong-based animal protection organization Animals Asia.

Minh won the contest open to all people living and working in Vietnam with his painting that depicts an elephant, tied with ropes and chains, standing on a ball and giving a performance while being threatened with bullhooks.

The first and second runners-up were also announced at the awards ceremony held over the weekend at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center at Tam Dao National Park in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.

They are Nguyen Dinh Tien Dung who was honored for his work on the cruelty of animal performances in the circus and Dang Nam Phuong with a painting describing what is going on behind circus animal tricks.

Launched in April, the contest aimed to reflect the catastrophic situation wildlife animals have suffered in the circus as well as to raise public awareness of it.

According to Animals Asia, many circus trainers use “negative reinforcement” which trains animals by punishment through physical intervention or withholding of food.

Moreover, social animals such as elephants and macaques are often housed singly, thereby preventing the establishment of normal social dynamics, the animal protection organization said.
