Hanoi to open nine more pedestrian streets

Nine more streets in the Hanoi Old Quarter in Hoan Kiem District will become spaces for pedestrians, according to a proposal from Hoan Kiem district authorities.

If the proposal is approved by the Hanoi authorities, it will be implemented in October.

The new pedestrian streets include seven roads and two alleys: Hang Chieu Street, Ngo Gach Street, Nguyen Sieu Street, Dao Duy Tu Street, Hang Bac Street, Dinh Liet Street, Gia Ngu Street, Cau Go and Trung Yen alley.

These streets are in the area for preservation as they are home to many historical and cultural relic sites, such as O Quan Chuong (Quan Chuong Gate), the only gate of the ancient Thang Long Citadel left today, and Thanh Ha temple where worships General Tran Luu of the Tran Dynasty.

These streets are also busy with 218 shops offering services for tourists, and hotels and bars.

These streets will be connected with the existing pedestrian streets of Hang Buom, Ma May, Dao Duy Tu, Hang Giay, Luong Ngoc Quyen, Ta Hien, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Hang Duong and Dong Xuan to create a vast space for tourists and local people to have fun during the weekend.

The authorities also hope to reduce the use of personal vehicles and build the habit of using public transport among locals.

These pedestrian streets will open from Friday night to Sunday night, from 7pm to 12pm in summer and from 6pm to 12pm in winter. All shops and bars in this zone will be allowed to open until 2am.

In addition to Huong Tuong Temple, Bach Ma Temple, Quan De Temple, the ancient house at 87 Ma May, 50 Dao Duy Tu, 61 Luong Ngoc Quyen, and Dong Thai T-junction, cultural and arts performances will be also held at O Quan Chuong Gate, Kim Ngan Temple, and Chuong Vang theater.
