Dong said, to prepare for the People’s Council meeting this December, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has prepared the plan to name and adjust names of streets in Hanoi. This time the city will name 60 streets.

The official said that in preparation for street naming, Hanoi's leaders asked the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to review all upgraded roads in order to adjust the names to match with the status of well-known people. In particular, the city leaders requested the department to consider names two big roads after late PM Vo Van Kiet and General Vo Nguyen Giap.

"Before General Vo Nguyen Giap passed away, the local bodies had been seeking an appropriate road to name after him,” Dong added.

Famous historian, Professor Phan Huy Le has suggested naming the road from Nhat Tan Bridge to the Noi Bai International Airport as Vo Nguyen Giap because this road is up to international standards.

Prof. Le said that in Hanoi’s regulations on street names, 10 years after the death of modern characters, their names are considered to be named for streets. But there are exceptions that cannot wait for 10 years.

Another historian, Mr. Duong Trung Quoc, agreed, saying that Hanoi is considered to name a road after late PM Vo Van Kiet though he died less than 10 years ago and General Vo Nguyen Giap is also such an exceptional case. Hanoi should find a big road to name after him, he said.

"Personally, I think that not only a road in Hanoi but roads in other provinces that have the close connection to General Vo Nguyen Giap, such as Thai Nguyen and Quang Binh should also be named after him," Quoc said.

Hanoi has some big roads to be completed by the end of 2013 such as Tran Phu - Kim Ma, the belt road 1 from O Cho Dua to Hoang Cau and Tran Khat Chan - Nguyen Khoai. The Nhat Tan - Noi Bai, extended Highway 5 are expected to be completed in 2015.
