Hanoi to build ‘smoke-free’ tourist sites, workplaces this year

The Hanoi government has requested that competent agencies take action to build models of smoke-free environments, including tourist sites and workplaces, this year for the sake of society and health.

The Vietnamese capital city will make available several non-smoking models including “smoke-free tourist sites,” “smoke-free restaurants and hotels,” and “smoke-free offices,” according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Similar models will be built in other public places such as trade centers, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter, and others.

Such smokeless models will contribute to promoting a civilized lifestyle in public places and bring beautiful images of the capital city – one of the country’s leading attractions – to both domestic and international visitors, the local government said.

The Hanoi People’s Committee has directed press agencies to run articles and features on the harmful effects of smoking on human health, and requested that the broadcast systems of the city’s 584 communes and wards provide information about such harm.

The local Department of Health is required to organize exchanges and provision of information on prevention and control of harmful effects of tobacco in a specific item on its website.

Meanwhile, anti-smoking panels will be installed on main streets, offices, and schools and leaflets on the impact of smoking will also be distributed in such public places.

The city authorities will also organize training on smoking prevention and control from now to 2020 for officials, inspectors, and propagandists in 30 districts.

Agencies concerned are requested to expand their inspection networks to detect and punish acts of illegal trade, transport, and import of tobacco products.

City authorities said they will annually reward individuals and units that achieve outstanding progress in building and developing smoke-free models in the city.
