The centrepiece of the indelible legacy of American composer Gunther Schuller (November 22, 1925-June 21, 2015) is his one-act opera The Fisherman and His Wife, beloved the world over.

Now audiences in Hanoi, both young and old, will have a chance to enjoy a German adaptation of this wonderful piece by Einar Schleef on November 28-29 at the Hanoi Youth Theatre, the Goethe-Institute has announced.

Based on a Grimm’s fairy-tale, Schleef’s version tells the story of a fisherman who lives in a small cottage, together with his wife Ilsebill. He is quite satisfied with their simple life, but his wife is not.

When the husband catches a magical fish the wife increasingly asks for wealth and power until she goes too far and asks to be like a god and the magical fish reverts the couple back to their original poor state.

The wife suddenly realizes she is happier being poor and the couple live happily ever after.

Show times and more information can be obtained at the Goethe-Institute http://www.goethe.de/ins/vn/en/han.html.
