Several roads connecting communes in the district have been rendered impassable after the water level rose to 1.2m.

Four among the affected communes – Thanh Xuan, Thanh An, Thanh Mai and Thanh Lam – have been totally isolated from other areas by the flood.

According to the district’s People’s Committee, 365 households have been evacuated.

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 3,600ha of plants and aquatic products have been damaged.

Thanh Xuan District, one of the hardest hit, has seen 50 houses claimed by the flood so far. Up to 103ha of rice, 30ha of cassava and 10ha of vegetables have been destroyed. Residents have to use boats to travel.

Nguyen Thị Hoa, a resident of Xuan Nam Village, Thanh Xuan District said that the water rose so fast that people were unable to evacuate in time or take preventative measures.

Another resident, Nguyen Canh Dien, told Vietnam News Agency that the water will probably recede very slowly.

On Tuesday afternoon, Nguyen Van Que, chairman of Thanh Chuong District’s People’s Committee said that local authorities had ordered schools in heavily-flooded and unsafe areas to cancel classes.

Forces from authorised agencies have been on duty around the clock to respond to any incidents.

Flooding from the river has turned people’s lives into chaos not only in Thanh Chuong District but also in other areas along the Lam River, such as Do Luong, Nam Dan and Hung Nguyen districts.
